Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

When an teenage makes club history in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official full international.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
