When Sunbathers Escaped Danger, Popular Picture Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous local residents, noticed loud noises ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore told her something was wrong.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and unshod … He moved at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many moments of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, police and paramedics attending to dozens of victims.

Community Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the community, with the beach facility beside the scene of the attack becoming a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, such as going into the surf to assist people in distress.

Following the tragedy, comments of appreciation were shared. An online statement conveyed appreciation for the responders who showed that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The squad of beach patrol issued a communication, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and support. We are deeply moved by the care for our team,” the organization wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it helps those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional beach safety officers, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the incident commenced through to late that night.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in ensuring our iconic coastlines secure for the public, but what we saw on Sunday should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and grapple with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we consider just how much good we have observed in the face of such evil.”
