The Two Fatalities Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Press On With Manhunt for Gunman.
The pair of scholars who were killed in Saturday’s violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant carried on following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies on social media, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Officials stated late Sunday that a man aged 24 detained in a police operation at a hotel about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was being released.
“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our community”.
The assailant discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a authority told the media outlet.
Police that raided the hotel seized two firearms and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, according to reports.
Those Hurt
Regarding the nine injured, one student was allowed to go home, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
A private school, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
More Condolences
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a shining example in that institution as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the group. “Ella was known for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and peers and lament the passing of his bright future.”
