The people of Israel mark two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
Citizens have assembled around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled official remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the plan.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the talks said that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future governance of the region
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose brother survived the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive are released no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.
In front of the prime minister's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Activist a participant stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the captives to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population desire the war to end in as payment for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the night falls, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis said two more dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff stated.
