As he approaches his sixth anniversary as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to achieving success.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on 20 December 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. Yet, that initial silverware remains his only significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“I can,” Arteta responded upon being asked about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the landmark with a game facing Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played immediately following his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

Given that trailing Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by over 100 injuries over the course of last season.

The manager is tied down by 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that success is required promptly.

The Manager's Mandate

He went on to explain, highlighting the constant necessity to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the message you convey.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, while singling out the team's buy-in as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

The team approaches the Everton match coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for the coming weeks.

Despite the injury crisis and the high-stakes environment, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
