The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
