New York's next mayor affirms his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key platform, was not quick to announce this decision right away after his electoral win in November.
"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
However his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
