New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
