Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
