Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He fought justice and justice triumphed.

Two months subsequent to receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last appears jail-bound.

Expected Imprisonment

The convicted coup-monger – who had been subject to residential detention in his estate while a set of legal procedures and petitions unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the coming days, amid mounting talk that he will be moved to a notorious maximum security prison.

Historical Comments on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the far-right ex- military man showed scant sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we provide these scoundrels a good life?” he once mused. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to finish in prison, you simply need is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Destination Discussion

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, several of whom this week inspected the complex in an seeming effort to dissuade the supreme court from banishing him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he expected the septuagenarian politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the result of a life-threatening assault during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is extremely serious. He won’t be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he commented, who also worried about packed cells and the condition of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells holding four dozen inmates: “That is virtually one square metre per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they complain, of course, of the terrible meals,” added the senator.

Backers Speak Out

The senator isn't the lone figure speaking out before the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.

Writing in a major publication, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest wrong in its past”.

“It represents an wrong that gnaws the hearts of millions people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Public Reaction

That may be correct considering the considerable following Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. But his expected jailing has also warmed the spirits of numerous other people who think he ought to be incarcerated for plotting to block his successor from taking power – and even scheming to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, stated: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to receive respectful care – but respectful treatment in prison. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years applauding the severe handling of inmates, had abruptly realized to their privileges. “Only now has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a prison to discover what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“He is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, degrading handling”.

Likely Incarceration Facilities

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected location appears to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “particular” detainees known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the spectacular leader's home, around 20 kilometers away.

As per information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – approximately the size of two parking spaces – and features a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a TV and even a minibar in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information indicated.

Political Reactions

The lawmaker criticized the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his fate in the {
