The Proposed Hack
Set one or two frozen cubes on the soil. The idea is that when the ice thaws, it steadily provides water, providing the root system a chance to drink in it and averting soggy earth.
The Detailed Method
This technique functions best for little planters and varieties sensitive to wet feet, such as moth orchids. Yet, the majority of tropical-loving foliage plants are averse to the cold. Their root structures evolved for heat, and icy water can stress or hurt them. Ambient climate is a significant part in this method's success: in a toasty room, the ice will melt almost instantly, giving little advantage, but in a cool area it may linger excessively, chilling the roots and slowing water uptake. It is crucial to ensure ice cubes are composed of pure, potable water and avoid force them in contact with stems or delicate roots.
Conducting a Trial
I tried on a Phalaenopsis. A couple of cubes per week kept the roots consistently damp preventing waterlogging. But, trying the identical technique on a ornamental foliage plant led to browning at the foliage margins, a definite sign of temperature shock.
The Final Verdict
The cube technique may succeed for Phalaenopsis, but it isn't appropriate for the majority of tropical-origin indoor plants and relies significantly on room climate. Thus, this method isn't advised; room-temperature water applied gradually is still the most reliable technique to thoroughly hydrate your green companions.
