"Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
The Former President's Furious Reaction
The video message reportedly prompt a furious response from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a combined declaration denouncing the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional loyalty and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and retract his dangerous language before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Officials' Strong Reaction
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a declaration.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who love this United States and took an oath to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the ex-president deems it punishable by death for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they execute their vow to the constitution and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "Every American must join forces and censure the president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is requesting the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress telling military personnel to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and establish all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "We see active officials of the federal government who conspired to organize a video message to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally promoting."
