California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its huge agribusiness.

An Update Shows No Dryness

A recent update from the federal monitoring program confirmed that California in its entirety is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This development was driven by multiple above-normal rainfall that topped up water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status involved severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and tragic losses. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were still classified as experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January washed away those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

But, authorities caution that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is only about 70% of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for long-term water security. State experts point out that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this positive water situation for the rest of the year.
