Addressing the Store Clerk That Made Me Absolutely Speechless – Kudos to You

The scene was a day of rest, and I was grumpy enough, refueling my mother's vehicle. The location was a typical gas station that also functions as a convenience store, so you run the risk of joining a queue customers carrying goods of pricey provisions. This is a dreadful thing to unfold when the sole aim is to pay for some fuel. Awful.

My position was fourth among those waiting. There was only employee working, a young woman. Something stood out in her demeanor. When the faffer at the first position had completed payment for a cleaning product, a baked snack, and his box of eggs, I could have sworn that I heard the cashier bid him to have a great day. Odd. Maybe it was a mistake, or perhaps she spoke and was being sarcastic. I wondered if perhaps she was an ally in the war on delays, reflecting my irritation for individuals slowing down people just getting gas like me.

Taking a step forward, becoming the third customer. The new leader of our group completed her gasoline purchase with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” No, actually, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. A stateside native? Here in Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here wishes anyone those exact words, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find many Americans visiting this town, least of all working in petrol stations or anywhere else.

Second in line at last. After an elderly lady dealing with a lengthy struggle with her carryall, her purchases, her wallet and her rewards card. This took an eternity. When she was done, she too was wished an excellent day. Definitely from the US. I could have confirmed it by saying something hilarious to her, to observe that reaction when they look at you, unsmilingly, and reply with genuine earnest: “That’s really funny.” However, nothing occurred of a jest to utter.

I just had to settle the genuine warmth – or a mimicry of sincerity, essentially the same as no different – while she stared me right in the eye, to my very core, and told me a wonderful day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
