A comprehensive search and rescue mission is actively under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of unlocated sailing vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Search Operations Launched

Authorities in Mexico has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were had on board at least nine personnel, per a military release.

The vessels had been scheduled to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are equipped with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine-person crew are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Recent Aid Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the island.

That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.

Wider Geopolitical Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to bring critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation began.

International organizations have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50k operations called off in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have intensified lately, with statements from several representatives underscoring the delicate situation regarding relations.

In response to previous proposals, a senior Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.

The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to find the sailboats and guarantee the well-being of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
